The presence of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in the MS Delta dates back to the 1940’s. Brothers participated in the MS Health Project Movement, assisting with transportation for citizens in need of physical exams and vaccinations. During that movement, the Grand Polemarch, Brother James Scott had an opportunity to visit the area.
In 1946, Grand Polemarch Augustus Parker (a Greenwood native), played an instrumental role in getting the MS Legislature, to establish the Mississippi Vocational College. He had observed the accomplishments of Christ Missionary and Industrial College and recognized the need for a four-year college in the MS Delta to train teachers and to strengthen vocational education. In 1950, Mississippi Vocational College became a 4-year college later known as Mississippi Valley State University in 1964.
In 1957, five brothers who were on the faculty of Mississippi Vocational College, Greenwood and LeFlore County School System, came together to discuss establishing an alumni chapter in Greenwood or Itta Bena. A few of the brothers were members of the Greenville Alumni Chapter. They had a discussion with then Southwestern Province Polemarch, Brother E.E. Allen, at the 21st Province Council, held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Brother Allen was some receptive but indicated that since the Greenville Alumni Chapter had just been established in 1954, there probably should be a little time for broadening a fraternity presence in the Mississippi Delta. Unfortunately, three of the five brothers who expressed interest in a Greenwood/Itta Bena Chapter left the area in 1958.
In 1990 (under Province Polemarch, Terry Lee) and in around 2005 (under Province Polemarch, Chuck Carr), there was interest, and a petition was assembled, but no action was taken. Current Grand Polemarch, Brother Reuben Shelton, has parental roots in Winona, Mississippi. He is proud of his Mississippi heritage.
Greenwood Grenada MS Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. was chartered on Saturday, October 29, 2022, on the Mississippi Valley State University Campus in Itta Bena, Mississippi. “We Are Achievement”
